 GOD's prophesy that Eli's line of priestly succession would end (be cut off) and did with Abiathar. Did GOD also call for and allow the killing of Joab, Shimei and Adonijah?


That's a tough question.  I don't find a direct command from God that Joab, Shimei and Adonijah be killed.  Joab and Shimei both showed treachery during the reign of David and for different reasons their lives were spared during his reign, however in 1 Kings chapter 2 David gives instructions to Solomon to make sure that they are brought to justice for their actions.  Whether that's from God or from David I'm not sure.  In regards to Adonijah he attempted to take the thrown behind David's back, and again paid for his treachery, Solomon's motive for killing him had more to do Adonijah's reason for wanted Abishag as his wife, which would have been another attempt to usurp Solomon since Abishag was considered to have belonged to David, and therefore rightfully Solomon.  It showed that Adonijah had not truly given up his desire for the throne.

Questions:
	This week we will be transitioning from the reign of David to the reign of Solomon as you are reading continue take note of the now familiar contrast between David the man, the sinner, and David the man of God. Pay special attention to chapters 22 and 23 as David poetically testifies to God's faithfulness to him and his faithfulness to God. He also warns those who come after him not to turn away from God. (As you are reading if you look closely you may see the inspiration for one of my favorite choruses!) Even though David's life was full of pain and strife he never wavered in his trust in God, and even when he sinned he confessed and repented and God forgave him, just as he will with us. As we move into 1 Kings we will see the end of David's reign and the beginning of Solomon's reign. Again it begins with violence and strife, but Solomon turns to the Lord and he blesses him abundantly and fulfills all of the promises that he made to David in regards to his son. As you are reading you will see the many blessings that God showered on Solomon and just how great he became, but he was a sinner just like us as we will see next week. What seeds of sin can you see as you read this week that might warn of the impending problems he had. What seeds of sin are lurking in our lives to cause problems for us I wonder?
